This is a great practice Paula. I'm back to revisit. I love your added "twists" of some classic postures, like the "fallen triangle". Adding the block for bridge reminds me of beginners' Pilates. I love your variations that have added benefits, and they are fun. Love, Alice xx

Wow. As someone who has hypermobility, especially in my hips, I really appreciate this targeted core and hip strengthening. It allowed me to feel safe stretching and I felt a deep release in my pelvis. One for me to come back to for sure. Thank you xx

Hey Paula, I really love the way you are creating your classes and I was super happy to see that you are offering a new "challenge"! In this class the end part of using the block here, gave me for the first time the subtle impression that it's blending into a workout/fitness style. And it honestly felt a bit strange for me. I appreciate that I didn't have this feeling in your other classes before. I don't know your background, but I'm white and I'm thinking about how I can practice yoga in a non-offending way. I'm super grateful for people putting efforts into decolonizing yoga, so that I can have the chance to learn about the origins and the power of yoga in a social justice way. These blends of yoga with the fitness and beauty industry, that you can see everywhere in the Western world are a horrible thing in my opinion. What do you think about that?

Hi Amei, thank you for sharing this—it’s such a thoughtful question, and I really appreciate the care you’re bringing to how yoga is practiced and shared. From my own perspective, and alongside the concerns you’re naming, I experience the many adaptations of yoga as a reflection of its resilience and depth. I’m often struck by how yoga has taken root in so many cultures and contexts around a world with many different physical, emotional, and cultural needs. Speaking only from my own experience, yoga has been a huge blessing to my health, and I’ve loved and appreciated how its adaptability can help it reach people with very different bodies, needs, and belief systems. I absolutely think there’s value in honoring yoga’s origins and staying aware of how Western systems—especially fitness and beauty culture—can dilute or distort it. Yet, at the same time, I’ve also seen how certain adaptations can make yoga more accessible to people who might not otherwise feel welcome or able to practice. For me, it feels less like East vs. West, or purity vs. dilution, and more like an ongoing relationship with yoga—one that allows the practice to take shape in ways that support both its integrity and the people practicing. ❤️

Hello Amei, thank you for your thoughtful comment. This is a really important topic and I'm glad you asked the question. Westernised and diluted 'fusion' styles of yoga can definitely be problematic and can often feel misrepresentative and disrespectful to the culture in which the practices originate. This is a complex topic and which I will not do justice to in a comment so I will leave that there for now. My personal background is across multiple disciplines including yoga, somatics, dance, conditioning as well meditative & contemplative practices and therefore when I create a class, it can sometimes include something from any of these lineages, and often is a combination. My primary interest across all these threads is the mind/body connection and how to deepen this connection. So while I might occasionally offer something that might feel more 'fitness/strength' oriented, what is more important to me is not whether you are building core strength (although for some people, this maybe important to them), it is more, how present can you be in your body and mind when you do this? And do you feel able to make choices that are right for you? There is more to be said here, but perhaps I will keep this for another time (a good idea for a newsletter if you are subscribed to that!) . I hope some of my response is helpful in some way and thanks for being here xox p

I'm personally glad your focus is not fitness, even though it feels great for the body in this sequence.

Thanks Paula. My in person yoga teacher incorporates Hanna somatics and occasionally some Feldenkrais inspired movement into her classes. The outcome for me during and after class is a feeling of groundedness, deep peace and inner strength. This is yoga that works for me and hopefully contributes to me bringing my peace into my daily life. I acknowledge that it can be seen as a physical departure from the traditional yoga canon, and my teacher is upfront about but it has still lead me to a path of peace and the consistent circling back to mindful presence. Much love to you and my teacher Angie Moffatt.

Yes, I totally embraced the challenge 😄 my thighs were shaking like crazy! which is probably a good thing. I have completely jello legs 🙈 and with the new research linking the strength and size of thigh muscles with longevity I'm happy with every opportunity to pump them up 😉
